Why we have to come out

Most quotes don't list the one number that matters.

You'd think you could just email us what you've got and we'd price it. Here's why that doesn't work.

A number by itself doesn't tell you much. High compared to what? You'd have to know what the work actually involves on your house — and that's exactly what nobody explained while they were quoting it.

So I come look at it myself. I measure, I check the condition of what everything's hanging on, and I photograph anything I find. Then I tell you what I'd charge and why, standing right there where you can see what I'm pointing at.

And if the quote you already have is fair, I'll tell you that. I'd rather be the guy who told you the truth than the guy who won a job by fifty dollars. You'd be surprised how often that's how I get the next one.

It takes about twenty minutes. There's no presentation and nobody sits down at your table.

How to read any quote

Five things to look for — on ours or anyone's.

Use this on whatever you're holding right now.

1. Is the footage on there?

Linear feet for gutters, squares for a roof. Without it you have no way to tell whether a price is high, low or fair. This is the first thing to check.

2. Does it name the actual product?

“Gutter guard” is not a product. “Architectural shingle” is not a brand. If you can't tell what's going on your house, you can't compare it or hold anyone to it.

3. What does the warranty cover?

Materials only, or materials and labor? There's an enormous difference, and it's usually buried. Ask which one you're getting and get the answer in writing.

4. Who's actually installing it?

Employees or subcontractors? It's a fair question and you're entitled to a straight answer. Ask who will physically be on your roof.

5. How long is the price good for?

If a number expires tonight, that's a sales tactic, not a price. A real quote holds for weeks. Ours holds 30 days.

And one gut check

If a price drops substantially when you say you want to think about it, the first number was never the real number. That tells you something worth knowing.

The promise

And if their price is fair, we'll say so.

It happens. Sometimes we measure a house, look at what someone else quoted, and it's a fair number for real work. When that's true, we say it.

We'd rather be the person who told you the truth than the person who won a job by shaving a hundred dollars off somebody else's number. You'll remember which one we were the next time something needs doing.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is the second opinion really free?
Yes, and there is no obligation attached to it. You get the number and the photos whether you hire us or not.
Why can't you just price it from the quote I already have?
Because most quotes do not list linear footage, downspout count or scope. A single number with no detail behind it cannot be compared to anything. So we measure it ourselves and give you something that can be.
Will you just undercut whatever I show you?
No. We price the job on what the job costs. Sometimes that comes in lower, sometimes it does not, and sometimes the quote you already have is a fair number for real work — in which case we will say so.
Do I have to be home?
Not for the measurement. But walk it with us if you can — it is a lot easier to show you what we are seeing than to describe it in a text.
How long does it take?
About twenty minutes at your house. You get the written price that evening, and it is good for 30 days.
