While you wait

Four things to do before we get there.

None of this requires going on the roof. Please don't go on the roof.

1. Move what you can

Get furniture, electronics and anything that matters out from under the leak. Put a bucket or bin down and a towel under it to stop splashing.

2. If the ceiling is bulging, drain it

Water pooling above drywall will eventually bring the whole ceiling down at once. A small hole at the lowest point of the bulge lets it drain into a bucket instead. It feels wrong. Do it anyway.

3. Kill the power if water is near it

If water is running near light fixtures, ceiling fans or outlets, cut the breaker to that area. Do not touch a wet fixture.

4. Photograph everything

Before you clean up or move anything, take photos and video. Insurance adjusters want to see the damage as it happened, and memory is not evidence.

Do not go up on the roof. Wet shingles are extremely slick, and storm damage means you have no idea what's still holding weight. Nothing on your ceiling is worth a fall.

What we do when we arrive

Stop the water first. Everything else after.

The first job is getting the water stopped — usually a tarp or an emergency patch over the failure point. That's not the repair, it's the tourniquet, and it buys us time to do the real work properly in daylight.

Then we document everything with photos, including drone shots of what can't be seen from the ground, and put together a written report you can hand your adjuster.

One honest caveat: we won't put anyone on a roof during an active electrical storm or in high wind. As soon as it's safe, we go. If we can't come immediately we'll tell you straight rather than leave you waiting on someone who isn't coming.

Storm-damaged shingles with missing and lifted tabs on a Louisiana roof
Questions

Straight answers.

What counts as a roof emergency?
Water actively coming into the house. A tree or limb on the roof. A section of shingles gone after a storm. Anything where waiting until Monday means more damage inside.
Do you really answer at night?
Yes. Call rather than text if it is urgent, and say up front that water is coming in. Roofs do not fail on a schedule.
Can you tarp it tonight?
If it is safe to get up there, yes. We do not put anyone on a roof in an active electrical storm or high wind — nothing on your ceiling is worth that. As soon as it is safe, we go.
What should I do while I wait?
Move what you can out from under it and put a bucket down. If water is pooling in a ceiling and bulging, a small hole at the low point lets it drain in one spot instead of bringing the whole ceiling down. Cut power to that area if water is near fixtures or outlets.
Will insurance cover it?
Often, for sudden storm damage. Photograph everything before anything gets cleaned up or moved, and keep receipts for any emergency work. We document the roof side with drone photos and a written report you can hand your adjuster.
