Central, Louisiana · Where the Comite and the Amite meet

Roofing and gutters in Central.

Central sits between the Comite and the Amite, and the two rivers converge at its southern edge. That geography is the single most important fact about this city, and everybody who lives here knows it.

The housing stock in Central

Central has a clear two-wave housing pattern: roughly 40% built in the 1970s and 80s, and another third in the 2000s and 2010s. Homeownership is about 89%, the highest anywhere we work. The archetype is a brick ranch on an acre-plus lot — and those 1970s and 80s roofs are the ones we look at most often.

Storms and water in Central

The Comite near Joor Road hit a record 34.2 feet on August 14, 2016, beating the previous record set in 2001. Mayor Jr. Shelton said roughly 25,000 of Central's 29,000 residents were affected. The parish district covering Central had the most damaged structures of anywhere in East Baton Rouge — an estimated 15,430. The mayor's line at the time was that it made the flood of 1983 “a mere distant memory.” Since then the city has put $7 million into drainage and built EarlyFlows, a forecasting system using real-time bayou monitors that can warn residents up to 48 hours ahead. Flood insurance rates came down as a result.

The trees here

Bottomland hardwood along both rivers — water oak, sweetgum, cypress — with pine up on the higher terrace. The 1970s and 80s subdivisions here have the same aging water oak problem as Baton Rouge, and LSU AgCenter puts a water oak's reliable life at about fifty years. Most of those trees are past it.

What we do in Central

How a Central quote works

I come look at it myself. I measure, check what's behind the gutter, look at your roof, and photograph anything I find. That evening you get a written price by text — good for 30 days, and it doesn't change.

My house is a 1970s brick ranch. What usually needs doing first?
On that vintage in Central it is almost always the fascia board and the hangers before it is the gutter or the roof. Fifty years of heat cycling works spike hangers loose and lets water sit against the board. Fix the board and re-hang, and you often buy another decade out of gutters that looked finished.
Does my roof have anything to do with flooding?
Not with river flooding, no — that comes from the rivers and nothing on your roof changes it. But where your downspouts discharge absolutely affects standing water against your slab in a hard rain, and in Central that is worth getting right.
How far is Central from you?
About forty minutes from our shop in Gonzales. We are out that way regularly and there is no trip charge.
