A leak is not automatically a new roof.
Call around after a storm and you'll notice something: plenty of the bigger companies are only interested if the whole roof is coming off. A four-hundred-dollar flashing repair doesn't pay for their sales process, so it quietly turns into a replacement conversation.
Leak repair
Finding where water is actually getting in — which is often nowhere near where it shows up on your ceiling. Flashing, boots, valleys, nail pops, chimney and skylight penetrations.
Missing and lifted shingles
After a wind event, replacing what came off and checking the tabs around it that got loosened but stayed put. Those are the ones that go next.
Flashing and penetrations
The single most common source of leaks on a roof that otherwise looks fine. Usually a repair, almost never a reason to replace.
Emergency tarping
If water is coming in right now, that gets stopped first and priced later. Call, don't text, if it's actively leaking.
Storm damage
Documented with drone photos and a written report, whether or not it turns into a claim.
The honest answer
Sometimes the roof really is done, and I'll say so. But you should hear that from someone who was willing to repair it.
I won't file a claim I don't believe in.
A claim that gets denied still goes on your record. File enough weak ones and you can watch your premium climb or your policy get dropped — and the contractor who pushed you into it is long gone by then.
So I'll look at your roof and tell you straight whether the damage is bad enough to warrant a replacement. Plenty of times the honest answer is no, and I'll say so even though it costs me the job.

Water finds the weak spot long before it finds your ceiling. These are the ones we see most in Ascension Parish.
Wind-lifted shingles
Wind breaks the adhesive seal without taking the shingle off. It looks fine from the driveway and leaks in the next hard rain.
Failed flashing
Around chimneys, vents, and where a roof meets a wall. Flashing fails long before shingles do and causes most of the leaks we find.
Hail bruising
Knocks granules loose and bruises the mat underneath. Shortens roof life by years and is often claimable.
Valley wear
Valleys carry the most water on your roof. In a place with 62 inches of rain a year they wear out first.
Soft or rotted decking
Humidity keeps decking damp. If it's soft, nothing you fasten to it will hold, and it has to be replaced before the roof goes back on.
Tree impact
Live oak limbs are heavy. Even a glancing hit can crack decking under intact-looking shingles.
August is the month that tests your roof.
Historically, August is Louisiana's worst month for hurricane landfall. Wind damage rarely announces itself — it lifts and unseals shingles that still look fine from the ground, and the leak shows up months later during an ordinary rain.
If a storm has come through, get the roof looked at while the damage is fresh and the timeline is clear. That matters for an insurance claim, and it matters for catching the problem before your decking gets wet.
